EKPOMA—THE Star Deepwater Petroleum, a subsidiary of Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, has constructed and donated an ultra modern science laboratory to Emuado Secondary School, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State.
Director of Star Deepwater Petroleum, Mr Richard Kennedy, who spoke at the inauguration, noted that the company found the need to erect the laboratory equipped with state of the art equipment, when it was discovered that science education was dwindling in the area due to lack of a laboratory for the students. Represented by the Warri Area Manager of the company, Mr Tony Emegere, he said, “The science laboratory donation is one of the programs in our social investment plan aimed at improving the teaching and learning of science subjects in our schools. This will further help in developing interest in science and technology among students. Societal relevance The Agbami co-ventures recognize the importance of education as a catalyst for unlocking potentials of the youths and developing their capacity for societal relevance. This particular project, therefore, is a product of our efforts to help generate, improve access to education for all Nigerians through the donation of science laboratory complexes, electronic libraries and scholarship”.
The Director of Schools in the state Ministry of Education, Dr Airen Okhako, who represented Governor Godwin Obaseki, commended the oil company for their gesture, saying: “It is delightful to know that such kind gesture was inspired by a son of the soil, who was former Commissioner of Education. This project will not only enhance the performance of our students, it will have a ripple effect in the entire local government area and it is going to have a ripple effect on the performance of the students in Esan land and Edo state in general.” The Onojie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness, Zaiki Anthony Ehizogie, the Abumere II, who was represented by Chief Benjamin Ovbiowele, the Obaseki of Ekpoma, who expressed joy over the project, saying it would serve as a “motivation to the students, they will not only be theoretically educated, they will also be practically educated and begin to think like Socrates and other great scientist.”
